Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Elvira Carrizal-Dukes


Dr. Elvira Carrizal-Dukes was born and raised in the El Paso, Texas, and Chaparral, NM, borderland region. Elvira is an Assistant Professor of Practice and Academic Advisor for Chicana/o Studies at The University of Texas at El Paso. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Journalism and Chicano Studies, and a minor in Theatre Arts and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film from Columbia University in The City of New York.

Elvira co-authored a peer reviewed article “La salud en mis manos: Localizing Health and Wellness Literacies in Transnational Communities through Participatory Mindfulness and Art-Based Projects” for Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society (2019)Elvira is the author of A.W.O.L. graphic novel (DukesComics, 2017), as well as a play Father’s Shadow / Sombra del Padre (Dramatic Publishing, 2001). She is is a filmmaker and the writer, director, and producer of Mariposa (2006) and The Weeping Pimp (2015). The Japanese language version of her graphic novel A.W.O.L. was exhibited at Tokyo Comic Con in 2018. More information about Elvira’s work can be found at: https://dukescomics.com/.
